DoomPC Experiment

DoomPC

This experiment is intended to help the general public (not geek) about the effects of not updating, no firewall router, and running IE on XP. We call this experiment “DoomPC” - for the doomed fate of the poor PC.

PC Specs:

Microsoft XP Home
Dell Intel Pentium III 990 MHz
128 MB RAM
20GB Hard Drive

An average PC for good ole grandma and grandpa for checking email and surfing the Sears website.

We hook this baby up to an enclosed high-speed Verizon broadband Cable connection. This is a CLEAN, freshly reinstalled XP Home Machine without Microsoft’s updates from 2002 and Service Pack 2. Let’s see what happens. Start the timer!

The first step is to go to IE and surf around popular sites:

www.msn.com
www.microsoft.com
www.gmail.com
www.amazon.com
www.google.com
www.yahoo.com

After just 24 MINUTES the Housecall Antivirus anti-virus picked up 13 Cases of the W32.Sasser.B.Worm.

After 66 MINUTES the Housecall Antivirus anti-virus picked up 88 Cases of the Sasser and other varients.

This was because Sasser is still floating around the internet after years of exposure to unpatched fresh XP SP1 PCs.

So please remember to patch your system!
