Linux on your ipod has many advantages over Apple’s default menu navigation appearance. With linux you can have the ability to play a wider set of fun games, unlock infinite expandability of your portable hard drive, navigate faster through menus (without the slow slide effect), play with fun little applications built in and have a wider variety of playable audio file formats. Plus, you can have this and still dual boot your normal Apple iPod mini OS without damaging any files or options. Although, it is recommended that you make a backup of your mini first. This article will explain the process to install iPodLinux on only an iPod mini. All other ipod installations check the website.

very cool, i got linux on my ipod mini now, with better games
anyone try it on the bigger ipods?
The ipodlinux website says there is not a stable release of the program for the mini or 4th gen ipods Is this stable to install then?
I’m not that impressed with iPodlinux. It’s a nice addition, and cool to experiment with, but the interface is much slower than Apple’s, and it takes ages for a song to load (on my 3g Ipod). The only reason why i ocassionaly use iPodLinux is the ability to record sounds without an expensive accesory.
Randy, the latest stable core file is not for the mini. The nightly builds from ipodlinux featured in the article works perfectly and is recommended for them. It’s safe and is proven to work, check it out on the ipodlinux forums.
im having a lot of trouble installing linux on my ipod… first of, after downloading the installer from this website, i tried unzipping it and it says its corrupt. SO i went to the official site (http://www.ipodlinux.org/4G_Installer) and got their installer. I install and put everything exactly where it needs to go. But when i boot up my ipod and hold the rewind button, it shows the apple logo, then goes to the linux penguin logo and dosent do anything… it just stays there. if someone could help me out that would make my day!!!
Ben, what kind of iPod do you have? This tutorial is for the mini only and the 4th gen are being worked on at the ipodlinux site. If it is a iPod mini, what kind, 1st gen or 2nd gen? I would be glad to help you out.
Josh
im using the 1st gen mini ipod…. blue like the one in the pic!!
well, i dont know what i did different this time, but it works!!
Ben, sorry you had that trouble. I mostly just use it to play some funner games while im listening to music and to show it off to my friends
. Glad it works now.
Josh
well i got 2, probably really simple questions… 1) how do i get to my songs on linux? i go to music -> artists… then all the options dissapear and it freezes. 2) how to i turn the back light on in linux??? i hold the menu button and nothing happens!
Ben
1) The songs should already be on the iPod linux as well if it is on the Apple’s side. It should come right up, try restarting the ipod again.
2) You have to first turn on that setting yourself. In the podzilla settings there is an option to turn the backlight on, it asks for 5 sec, 10 sec, 30 sec… etc. Hope this helps.
I got an Ipod mini and would like to use this.. But I just dont know which generation my Ipod mini is. It tells me its Version 1.3, does that help?
Another simple question, will this or not work on the 2nd Generation Ipod minis?
Fade, you have a first generation (like in the picture), the ipodlinux website says it will work on the 2nd generation but it has been tested on the first generation (you can tell by the color) in this article. Try it and see if it works. If it doesn’t work then you wont be able to boot to your linux, but your apple firmware will still be the same, so you have nothing to loose. Good luck!
I tried doing this and I am confused about the whole moving the start file part. In addition, when I reboot after using the installer it tells me to contact ipod support and will not boot. The only thing I have been able to do is plug it in, use a hex editor and change the system file and then update it again. Im not sure what version I have. It says v1.4 if that helps. Any help you guys have to offer would be great. thanks
It is essential for you Jeff to replace that Start file for this to work. When you extract that first zip file (4gipl), there is a file named start in the folder. Go into my computer, open your ipod drive (if you cant see it Enable Disk use in iTunes options), and copy that start file into the ipod drive, you will have to say yes and replace the file. Hope this helps Jeff, and i’ll be in the chat if you have more questions.
Drew
I go to the settings to turn the backlight on to 1 min… then it dosent do anything… so i try holding the menu button and still nothing happens,
my music is still not showing up…. could it be that i installed linux before putting my music on so the linus dosent know its there???
In settings, when you turn the Backlight timer on it should kick in the backlight automatically, I would set it to like 10 sec and when your done on the settings scroll down and click save settings. If that doesn’t work, I will have to look more into it.
I just had my songs on my ipod originally and then installed linux and it has all those songs that I can play. What happens when click on My Music. Does anything happen? It might take a couple of seconds to load. Hope this helps.
Drew
I followed the directions but when I boot it just shows the Apple logo. I thought I had done something incorrectly so I did the ipodlinux installer again. I unplugged my iPod (mini) and after it showed just the Apple logo again it showed a file with an exclamation point and said “www.apple.com/support/ipod”. I went there and followed some of their common sense repair options and now my iPod still just displays the file. I bought mine in December of 04, so I think it’s 2nd or 3rd gen, not sure honestly. I can see my iPod as an external drive in My Computer, but iTunes won’t recognize it.. help?
zach, the problem seems to be that you might not have replaced some files correctly. i had the same problem too and then i realized i didnt replace the start file to the ipod. when you plug the ipod into your computer make sure it is booted up already in the Apple firmware, thats why you should always choose to have linux as not the default option to boot. if you bought it in 04 then you have the 1st gen, just make sure you copied those replacement files correctly and when you plug the ipod let apple firmware be running. hope that helps zach, if you have any questions i should be in the chat room. good luck.
I did remember to copy the “start” file. Right now it is not booted into Apple firmware, as it is stuck outside of boot, and there seems to be no way to boot it.
zach, the only thing now is just install the update from apples website and hit the restore function. all your songs would still be on the itunes so you didnt loose anything but you will have to put them back on your ipod, which is a pain, sorry about that. im not sure what would of happened. if theres no way to boot then thats the thing you have to do, i know a little frustrating. hope this helps.
I’m in the same boat as Zach, I think. I have a silver 4GB 2nd Gen.
After running the installer there was no start file to replace in root so I just added the one specified. I then could boot into Podzilla (the Apple firmware was still the default) and was able to change settings, use the games, but going into Music showed no options and seemed to lock it up. I tried the installer again then did the start file copy to root to make sure everything was OK. It now boots to the Apple logo, goes right to linux and ends up on an Exiting message and a blinking cursor.
If there’s no functional OS on this to connect to my PC then the Restore utility isn’t an option is it?
Did I just make this thing a doorstop?
Thanks
zach try putting it into disk mode
u can do that by holding action and rewind when the apple logo shows at startup
yo thanx a lot man this worked on my ipod mini
Sorry for the double post. My Sidekick didn’t show that my earlier post registered.
is there anyway to improve music quality
Well, I restored my iPod. The problem was that I didn’t actually install the iPod software after I reformatted my computer. I tried it on another PC and got my iPod working again. I did the installer and this time everything worked out great, but when it boots there’s no Linux. Holding rewind does nothing, it just boots normally. I guess i’ll try it again.
joey, not that i noticed. i never had a problem, i had success playing ogg, aac, mp3 and wav. i haven’t tried flac yet. they all sounded the same if i played the aac and mp3 on the apple’s side. if theres a major difference for you check the ipodlinux website help wiki (they have a blog about how-to’s) hope that helps man.
Thats the problem. Give it a rest and try again and make sure ALL files are downloaded, so you don’t run into an issue. Glad it works now though… There’s not a way to turn it into any doorstop because you can use disk mode or restore.
Ok… the backlight still dosent work… and my music isnt showing up…. when i got into any of my music options… nothing shows up and it locks up. i even cleaned off my ipod and did everything again… same results. baahhhh!!!
dang ben, it gives you still that problem? when you cleaned out your ipod did you put your songs on apples firmware first with itunes and then install linux on top of that? sometimes mine locks up but when i restart the ipod it works. about the backlight, turn the backlight timer on in apple’s firmware first, that might be it. set apples for 5 sec, save, restart, and then in linux, set it for 5 sec and save. see if that works. good luck.
i cant listen to songs on my ipod mini for some reason
and when i try to play most of my songs it says no such file or dicrectory
ahhhhh its mad annoying i have tried everything
restoring my ipod, reinstalling linux, trying a diiferent linux then i went back to the version above
Joey
did you reinstall the ipod , put the songs on it and then install linux on it? if you have a lot of songs i notice it might take a few seconds and if you press something when its loading for that second it will freeze. also which version do you have, 1 or 2? peace.
i installed all songs on my ipod mini(1g) before intalling linux and i even tried restoring it and redoing it again
will changing the kernel or podzilla build not make it work
i did the same thing with my ipod mini 1g and the songs showed up after a couple of seconds. changing the kernel or build would change it, but did you use the default ones in the article. ill be in the chat. peace.
i used the default ones and my songs show up but i can hear them in linux but when i load apple they are fine
WIth Tux, can the iPod read formats other than just the Apple format? For example copying songs via Winamp into the iPod that are standard WMA or MP3?
you still use itunes because you still have to update songs on your apple ipod firmware, but when i tried it, it plays mp3s and wma great. thats another advantage. hope this helps!
I have done everything correctly but i am not sure what you mean when copying the start and podzilla files to the ‘root’. at the moment I have just copied and pasted them directly to the drive so the directories are F:\START and F:\PODZILLA. When I boot my iPod up it shows the apple logo thea folder with an apple support site url unerneath. Can you please tell me what I am doing wrong.
Mark, you want to copy the start file to the F:\ or whatever your ipod drive is (there should be a start file in there already and you replace it with the one given.) Make sure you do that first, that is the most common problem and see if it works. Comment back if not.
Thanks but I am still having the same problem when I open the the iPod drive in Windows Explorer I see the folders: Calender, Contacts, iPod Control, linux, Notes. And the files, podzilla and start. And the same thing happens when I boot it up. i have searched the iPod several times and there was no start file.
Mark, if you installed the ipodlinux-installer correctly the start file will appear in F:\ along with your linux folder. You say you have the podzilla and start file but then you say there is no start file. The start in the folder is the one that you replace (it is a very small file.) Hope this helps.
I think I will wait until the official version comes out because the installer isnt working with mine for some reason…
Alright, I downloaded everything for iPodLinux as stated above, but when I looked for a “start folder” I couldnt find one. Then I found something that said plainly, “start.”, so I copied that to my iPod Mini 4Gig 2nd Gen. I safley removed hardware, rebooted, and as soon as I saw the Apple Icon, I pushed the “rewind” button for at least a minuted or so, and nothing happened. I figured I would push the center button and the rewind button at the same time when I saw thee apple logo after rebooting. All I got was a test screen full of stuff Ive never seen before, please tell me what I need to do to get Linux, thanks.
Once again, windows says it needs to know the program which created it, how do I get that?
thanks
Garry, there is no start folder it’s a start file. That’s the one you want to replace. If you don’t replace that file with the new one it will give you that problem you had. Once you do that, you will push the select and menu button and then the rewind and you will see the Tux linux logo. Also did you install the ipodlinux-installer? It should have created a folder on your ipod as linux. Hope this helps.
There’s something wrong with mine, similar to the problem that Ben had earlier…
I’ve got a 1G mini and I followed the instructions properly, but like some other people said before, theres no ’start’ file to replace. I just added the only start file from the ‘4gipl’ folder to the root of my ipod..
Now everytime I reset the ipod and boot it into linux holding down rewind, the Tux logo just stays there and nothing happens..
Can someone plz help me out?
Much appreciated - PHaT
Sorry about that, I installed it with the updates ON this time, and there was a file named ’start’ that I replaced…
But its STILL frozen on that damn penguin logo! Any help would be appreciated, I’m pretty sure I’ve done it properly so its kinda annoying.
Thanx - PHaT
does anyone’s freeze up when you go into the music menu, and select one of the options?
i tried a newer kernel and podzilla…. all to no avail. i have the 4th gen ipod which has basically all the same hardware as the mini
Ok, thank you, everybody, for your help. But I need someone who is willing to tell me in detail how to install Linux on my Mini. I am literally stupid when it comes to this type of thing, so you’ll have to hold me hand through the steps, so to speak. Please tell me everything I need to know about using the “My Documents” and how to put it to the “root” of my iPod. This will be greatly–no, immensely appreciated. I Thank all of you for your support, again, thank you (I really think Linux is cool).
PHaT, in your apple ipod updater, use the restore feature to set it back to original preset. You will have to put back your songs onto it but it shouldn’t be a problem unless you have other stuff on the ipod in which you would want to backup before you restore. I would suggest doing it again and see if it works.
Matt, on my ipod, once and a while it freezes and I just have to restart the thing and it works perfectly again. The 4th gen ipod doesn’t have the same hardware as the mini and they are both compiled differently. Check out the ipodlinux forums for details on the 4th gen progress.
Garry, with your other posts it seemed like you were almost there. I am glad your interested and your welcome, I know linux is always an awesome alternative. I defiantly know from experience that is not always the easiest thing to configure to your liking and installing, although they are trying to make it easier… You don’t have to do anything with my documents, I think these are the easiest steps to follow, and I think your problem was that you just got confused on the start file. Read each step carefully, once you install the ipodlinux installer you will see the linux folder and the start file. Within the 4gipl folder that you downloaded there is an updated version of this start file that you will need to drag to the ipod drive and overwrite. I really hope this helps, if you have specific detailed questions, post back. Good luck Garry, we will get this to work. Peace.
Thanks ARay, but I have 2 probably important questions: #1 How do I get anything to the root of my iPod? And #2, I downloaded everything needed to my desktop for linux, and when I go to open it, a window comes up stating, “Windows cannot open the selected item because it needs to know the program that created it.” (paraphrased) Then it has 2 boxes to choose from one stating: Choose program from a list, and he second box: Search the internet for a program. I dont understand what is was I did wrong. Thank you for your help and support, it is very much appreciated.
1) To get to the root directory is easy. Go to my computer and you will see your ipod drive listed as another drive (usually the F:). If you don’t see that as a drive you will have to go into itunes, go to edit/pref and under the ipod tab check “Enable Disk use.” Go back to My computer and there you will see the drive.
2) You don’t want to open those files, you can’t inside windows. They are data files for the ipod. The one you do want to open and run is the ipodlinux-installer, that is located inside one of the folders. Look for that file and run it. These steps are from the article and now that you know how to open the drive and run the installer you should have no problem. Hope this helps.
ok, so i have a 4th generatoion ipod, and i just want to know is there an ipod linux for my ipod? seems to have one for every other kind except….mine…= \
I want to load linux onto my ipod mini 4G but i click on the windows installer link and there is an error. can someone maybe email me a link that i will be able to download the windows installer from?
jorge, check out the 4G iPodLinux Installer, just make sure you backup your ipod if you try it out.
robert, that link is the most stable link of the bunch, today the whole site went down, so try back tomorrow. If it’s not working tomorrow, I will check into it to see if there is a better link. Thanks!
Thanks for the help mike
mike the link on this site still does not work maybe you could find out wats wrong or send me a better link in my email. all help is appreciated
hey mike, thanks for the help, although do you know an easy free way to back up your ipod? i have a program called euPOD PRO which is free, but the main objective is to increase the volume of the songs, not to back it up, even thought it supoosedly backs up the ipod in case it crashes. the things is, i just dont trust it. lol
I installed linux successfully on my mini 2G after a few tries. Use ipodlinux unsupprted ipod mini 2g version!
Everything works but iBoy (Gameboy emulator) and playing music. It freezes when I change song. Anyone got a solution? Im using the latest kernel and floydzilla.

hey i install everything right but it dont work on my ipod mini like the one in the picture can somebody help me step by step a better waY?
Stefan M - Mine freezes once and a while and it usually fixes when I restart it. why are you using floydzilla when you can use podzilla? try it will podzilla.
John - hey, which ipod mini do you have? the first gen or the second gen? this only works for the first gen. this is a good step by step tutorial, I wouldnt know how to explain it more. if you have a specific question comment back. good luck.
after installing i disconnected my ipod mini. then i pressed the select and play button at the same time, but the screen “Disk Mode” “OK to Disconnect” shows up. what did i do wrong?
Hey great site man. I installed sucessfully on my 2g ipod mini 4gb (silver). It’s awesome. I’m a huge linux fan, but still a noob. I have one problem and that is when I go into my music folder, the ipod freezes. Besides that the scrolling and everything else is just smoother. Hopefully soon there will be a new build that will correct this bug, that others seem to have as well.
I RECENTLY BOUGHT A USED IPOD 20GB FROM EBAY FOR MY DAUGHTER FOR HER BIRTHDAY. AND IT WOULD DOWNLOAD MAYBE 20 SONGS AND IT WOULD FREEZE AND WOULDNT DOWN LOAD ANYMORE AND AFTER AWHILE THE IPOD WOULD DELETE ALL THE SONGS IN THE IPOD ITSELF..IF ANYBODY OUT THERE HAS ANY INFO. PLEASE LET ME KNOW..
hey tom, i will be glad to help, meet me in the chat room, click chat live, ill be in there.

it wont let me unzip podzilla or the kernal one, it only asks me to open the file from a list. Does this mean that the file is already unzipped?
ok look guys i have tried and tried and i dont no how 2 install my ipod mini !!!!!!!! some one PLEAZ help!!!!
hey brittany, can you give some more info. did you already try to install ipodlinux? what type of ipod do you have? ill be glad to help.
Hi, i have a 2g mini and have tried following this and other similar tutorial but i don’t understand how to unzip the kernel and podzilla files. They’re not zip folders. I can undertsnd how to unzip the installer but how do you unzip a .gz file?
Any help would be much appreciated.
Dave.
Hey Dave, you would unzip the files in winzip or another program like that. You dont open the .gz file. Run the setup ipodlinux exe. If theres any thing else I can help you with just post back.
i have a question, y is it that no1 helps me when i have a question, but 20 min. later of ne1 else, admisnistrator helps them like he is god….I HAVE PROBLEMS CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE HELP!!..if u are going to help me then post back, otherwise, i wont bother typing my problem
nick, sorry about that. it doesnt take up that much space about 12 mbs i think. its really not a problem on a 4gb. im guessing your tring to unzip it in winzip, i thought winzip opened gz files, if it doesnt i always use winrar, its the best. you will be able to unzip all three files with this program. hope this helps nick!
please comment back if you have any more questions.
lol thanks, i did have one more. Every time i open do the installer, like it finishes creating the backups and everything, but it never installs, an error message always comes up. I dont know what is wrong, but the error message never fails to show up as soon as i click install.
THANK YOU SO MUCH ID KISS YOU…. i got the error file thing and i was like crap then when i restarted i seen the files being ran and i almost had a heart attack it took me three days to find a working tutorial thank you so much……

my computer won’t recognize it
can someone please help
zac and j2 you want to restore your ipod with the ipod updater, there must of been something wrong with the install. backup first. hope this helps.
The ipod updater dosen’t recognize my iPod
you have to boot it up in the apple firmware not linux. hope this helps.
i tried installing linux on my 4g ipod mini and i accidently told it to boot up linux in the begining and it broke it. now when i trie to restore using an ipod updater it doesnt recognize it.help!?!?!?
http://ipodlinux.org/forums/
That will help up you Karim. You have to switch to apples firmware by holding down the back button when starting up and then you connect it. It’s not broke, don’t worry. You just have to tweak it right in order to have it show up correctly. Hope this helps.
it wont let me download the third file
i have a ipod mini 1g blue, just like the one you used. i folowed all your instructions perfictly and i restart my ipod by pressing down the menu and select buttons for five seconds and i hold rewind while the apple logo is there and it just goes the the original ipod firmware just like i never did anyting
pleezzz help me~!!! i really want lunix on my ipod to show off to all my friends
anyone know anything about a diagnostic mode on the 2nd gen ipod mini? i flipped the hold switch on and off, held the action button and menu button till the screen went blank, then held the action button and rewind button, a diagnostic menu appears which allows you to scan memory and the hard drive, there’s actually quite a bit of stuff there. anyone else seen this???
i’d like to add one more thing, if u have the frozen apple on your ipod, you can force it into disk mode by olding the menu and action buttons till the screen goes blank, then hold the action and play button, it will go into disk mode and u can connect your usb cable, it shows up in my computer!!!
I really want linux on my 4g ipod mini
If anyone could help me it would be really great
But these instructions are to vague………or im just slow
so someone pleeeeeaaasssee IM me at my screen name
its…………. DukeDevil231
Thanx alot
By the way my mini is 4gb 2gen
It finally worked
If anyone is having trouble installing it on a 1st or 2nd gen ipod mini than go to this website
http://blogtuts.gameportalonline.com/2005/10/19/how-to-install-ipod-linux-on-1-2g-mini-4g-photo-from-windows/
Its more detailed and has afew steps that are missing on this site that got linux to run on my 2nd gen ipod mini
Hi. I hope someone can please help me!
I have installed ipod Linux on my iPod mini (silver, 6gb, (4th gen?)) and my iPod will not work now.
It boots with the Apple logo and then freezes. If you move the scroll wheel, you can hear a clicking in the background as if scrolling up through tunes, although the only thing on the screen is the Apple logo.
If I re-boot with rewind/action the Apple Diagnostics boots up. Everything seems ok here. The iPod doesn’t appear in finder/iTunes when connected. Its can’t be seen in iTunes either.
I think the cable is working ok since in the Diagnostics screen, under the Status menu, as I connect and disconnect the iPod physically from my Mac, the USB/Pwr status changes from 0 to 1, indicating that the cable is OK.
I really just want to get my iPod working again! I really miss listening to it on my way into work!!!
Any advice would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!
Thanks,
Paul
the first link isnt working does anyone kno another website that has it???
I a running linux on my second generation iPod and I have a couple questions:
1) Can videos run on these iPods? I have tried runing AVI(which is suppose to work) but it screws up. I have seen videos of people playing videos, through linux on their black and white screen ipods.
2) Is it possible to have both Podzilla and Floydzilla on your ipod and run which ever one you want?
3) How do you install ‘complicated’ such as Doom? Doom was a breeze but when i tryed to install half-life and others, they didnt run.
4) My music isn’t playing on the linux menu. Is that due to the number of songs on my ipod (around 2000) or something else?
5) Is this software safe enough to run on my semi-new iPod photo. Is it worth the risk?
Thanks!
Ron
1) With the non-color ipods, im not sure of a program that can run avi. you might want to check out the ipodlinux forums. I am not sure about a program for that.
2) I wouldn’t risk the chance of running two alternative bootable fs for the ipod. The basic input for the ipod when you turn on the ipod is original apple firmware or alternative. Im sure there are hacks out there, but im not sure why you would want to.
3) http://idoom.hyarion.com/screenshots.php is a good doom client for the iPod 2G and nanos. try this one or if it doesnt work you might want to try this http://ipodlinux.org/Doom.
4) I had problems with ipodlinux and music on the 2G. I know for a fact they support it with the current models, as for the old ones they dont recommend installing it in the first place, let alone play music with it. so i didnt have much success with that.
5) Its perfectly fine to put linux on new ipods, if it doesn’t work all you would have to do is remember to keep the original apple firmware, boot, and restore through the ipod update program. BUT KEEP IF YOU KEEP DATA FILES BESIDES ITUNES SONGS - REMEMBER TO BACKUP!! Although, I would be careful, for some reason, on my ipod mini it messed up the battery life to only give me 30 minutes of play time when I installed linux. I returned it and the genius bar gave me a new one no problem. So that was good, but there’s always precautions when installing this stuff. But thats what makes me the daredevil geek that I am. Hope this helps.
Mike

It doenst work my computer doesnt even sense my ipod anymore and all my ipod does it boot up the logo and it says “apple.com/support” help Anybody
mick/ logan - the link should now work… it does for me

i stil cant get linux on my ipod 4 gig.
how do i no which generation it is?
well first off its a mini so it will work no matter what mine is the newest and it worked
when you zip somkething it put everything in a folder and the folder is acctually a file(a zip)
and you cant rename something when its in win zip you have to extract it first
make a folder called linux
make three folder is that 4gipl, podzilla, kernal
extrat all the 4gipl to the 4gipl folder extract the kernal to the kernal and the pozilla to the podzilla
when you reaname open up the podzilla folder and rename the file ou extracted into it from the podzilla zip
the same with the kernal
and jjust follow directions from there i got it and it works fine
sry about the typos wireless keyboard w/ bad connection
make a folder called linux in that folder make three more name after the zip file podzilla, kernal, etc.
extract the files to the right folders and rename them after you extract them.
